1 Plastic shopping bag, 12 minutes of use = 1,000 years of pollution: It takes up to 1,000 years for a plastic bag to break down. On average, a plastic shopping bag is used for just 12 minutes. In the ocean, the plastic is broken down into tiny pieces. These pieces are eaten by fish and cannot be digested. Consequently, the plastic builds up and enters into the food chain.

World Counts estimates 2,173,958,154, 931, and counting have been produced worldwide in 2022 to date (6/8/22). About 100 billion plastic bags per year pass through the hands of U.S. consumers alone. About 1 of every 200 bags, or less than 1% get recycled and around 10% will end up in the oceans. Wildlife and livestock ingest them choke on them and die from it.

Widespread use of plastic bags is #unsustainable. Plastic does not biodegrade it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces over time, a LONG, LONG time. Plastic never “goes away” but continues to take up space in landfills, clutter landscapes, and clog and pollute waterways threaten wildlife and has implications for human health as it infiltrates the food chain.
